When I saw his light shining forth,
In fear I covered my eyes with my palms,
Afraid for my sight because of the beauty of his form.
So I was scarcely able to look at him at all.
The lights from his light are drowned in his light
and his face shines out like the sun and moon in one.
A spirit of light lodged in a body like the moon,
a mantle made up of brilliant shining stars.
I bore it until I could bear it no longer.
I found the taste of patience to be like bitter aloes.
I could find no remedy to bring me relief
other than delighting in the sight of the one I love.
Even if he had not brought any clear signs with him,
the sight of him would dispense with the need for them.
Muhammad is a human being but not like other human beings.
Rather he is a flawless diamond and the rest of mankind is just stones.
Blessings be on him so that perhaps Allah may have mercy on us
on that burning Day when the Fire is roaring forth its sparks.

He was the light and the brilliance we followed,
He was sight and hearing second only to Allah,
By Allah, no woman has conceived and given birth
To one like the Messenger, the Prophet and Guide of His people.
Nor Has Allah created among His creatures,
One more faithful to His sojourner or His promise
than he who was the source of our light.
Blessed in his deeds, just and upright,
O best of mankind, It was though I were in a river,
But now, without you, I have become lonely in my thirst.

This is the first graphic novel I’ve reviewed for this blog (and the first time in general). I bought a copy of Habibi as a birthday present for my brother, who had a copy of Thompson’s previous graphic novel Blankets. Habibi is set in an Orientalist inspired Muslim nation, and tells the story of Dodola and Cham (aka Habibi), two slaves who find each other as children, become separated, and are eventually reunited many years later.

The story has two main themes, both of which are accentuated by the fact the novel is set in a fairy-tale like Orientalist vision of the Middle East: the exploitation of women by men, and society and nature by Man

The first theme is explored through the story of Dodola. Living in the desert with Cham, she finds by prostituting herself to caravan merchants, she is able to provide for the both of them. As Cham reaches his teens and develops an attraction to Dodola, he eventually sees her being raped by one of these merchants, this moment has a devastating effect on Cham, and throughout the majority of the story whenever he has a moment of arousal to her or anyone else, that memory in time comes back to haunt him. Ironically Thompson’s skill as an artist comes through the most at this part of story. The reader cannot help but feel what Cham is going through when he recounts this memory, the reader was ‘there’ and knows what he saw, and can feel what Cham is going through. Thompson’s skill at depicting previous memories and dreams makes you feel exactly what the character is experiencing. Eventually Dodola is kidnapped and is put in the Sultan’s harem, where she is constantly abused and violated by the caricatured Sultan. As a result of exploring sexual exploitation, the depiction of nudity is widespread throughout the entire novel (which may be bothersome to some readers, such as myself), one can see that Thompson has a fascination with the feminine form and this comes through in his work (Both in this novel and in Blankets).

The theme of exploitation of natural resources and society is explored a number of times throughout the novel. At the beginning we see Cham reaching water from a reservoir that has accumulated due to the construction of a dam, which in turn takes all the water away from a nearby village. The sub story of Noah the Fisherman is set in a slum of the fictional city of Wanatolia, which has been completely submerged in sewage due to the removal of clean water by the authorities. This theme draws parallels with what goes on with the Middle East today (and in some senses the wider world). Particularly the subjugation of labourers, the degradation of the poor at the expense of economic opportunity, the loss of natural beauty and so on. Together with sexual exploitation, the novel conjures an image that is the epitome of human evil: lustful, wasteful, misogynistic, abusing, deceitful. It acts as a reflection on ourselves and the society around us.

One thing that stands out in Habibi is the use of Islamic/Arab/Persian themes that run parallel to the main story. Qur’an, Hadith, poetry, science, astrology, numerology, calligraphy, the amount of sources Thompson has consulted and used are vast. The Arabic language is used to represent many things in the story, and Thompson’s depiction of Islamic art stands out immensely. One thing I did however find troublesome was his depiction of Prophets, the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) is depicted, but with a veil as per the Ottoman and Persian miniature tradition. Seeing many things from the Qur’an depicted in a comic book form is a peculiar experience, Thompson is largely respectful, but when it comes to traditions that are also found in the Judeo-Christian background in many cases his work comes across as insulting, this is probably due to his background as a non-conformal Christian (which formed the basis of the story in Blankets). The only two characters depicted not found in Judeo-Christendom are the Prophet (SAWS) and al-Khidr, both of whom do not have their faces shown which might indicate that Thompson did this on purpose. Overall the use of the Prophetic stories do not really add much, it seems as though they were just added to contribute to the feel of an exotic Middle Eastern existentialist story, and I personally would have preferred if they were not included.

For people who approach this book without prior knowledge about it, they may be left disturbed and appalled. It’s certainly not going to appeal to many Muslims (though this may not have necessarily been the case if the Prophets of Allah were not being caricatured). In the end this is a book that will both move you, with the story of love and friendship, and also shock you, for it acts as a reminder that sexual exploitation is a reality and what Dodola goes through is something many women have suffered from both now and in the past. If we can feel this way by looking at comic book characters, then what about people who have to suffer it in reality? For an explanation of Thompson’s use of orientalism, and many other things to do with the book I would highly recommend the following interview: A Conversation about Habibi’s Orientalism with Craig Thompson. You will also find a link to that page that leads to the interviewer’s original review of the book which contains extracts from the novel, and you can see examples of exquisite art (be warned it also shows some excerpts of the sexually oriented parts of the novel as well).

I certainly didn’t agree with many of the images used in the novel, but the story certainly makes you feel what the author wants you to feel. It’s an experience that results in a whirlwind of emotions, and you can see parts of yourself in many of the characters (particularly for men). Thompson both wrote and drew the entire thing by hand himself, and it’s certainly an immense achievement in both sense of storytelling and art. Having a look at the snippets of praise on the Wikipedia page might indicate this is something that may just grow in popularity and become iconic in the comic book world.

I forgot to mention a few things in my last post with regards to Muslims visiting Prague. The following blog post is an excellent resource, which I found very useful, and from the comments you can see others have benefited as well: Islam in Prague; Resources for Muslims

As you will see from the link there is Mosque in the city centre, the road it’s on faces directly towards the front of the State Opera. It’s a in a large building with a few Arab owned shops but it’s not signposted. As you walk in, towards your left you will see a door leading to some stairs which will take you to the prayer room which acts as the Islamic centre there.

Halal takeaway food is widely available. There was even a place right in front of the hostel we were staying at. As an aside I would recommend visiting Vegetarian Dhaba Beas, vegetarian Indian food which is sold by weight. It’s cheap and cheerful food in a very nice and well decorated decorum. The Lonely Planet guide said the chefs were from North India, but the branch we bumped into, which was closer to where we were staying, had Czech cooks, though their efforts weren’t too bad!

Prague for me was a city that preceded its reputation. I didn’t know much about the place or what there was to see, all I knew was that it had loads of old buildings (which is usually enough incentive for me to visit a place), and many tourists go there every year. So this December I managed to have a few days annual leave left over, and in looking for a cheap new city to explore my finger landed on Prague.

The centrepiece of the city is the Charles Bridge and the surrounding area, a Gothic-era structure that is lined with Christian statues and idols, which then leads to the castle. Aside from that there’s not much else. There are a few cathedral sized churches dotted around the city, the most impressive one that we visited being St Nicholas’s which faces directly at you as you walk from the south end of Charles Bridge. After about a day and a half, we had seen pretty much all of the city’s major sights, and I was left feeling a little underwhelmed. Yes, the amount of varying types and ages of buildings are quite impressive, and it is a very nice city to see, but compared to Andalusia, there is nothing that really makes you stand back and absorb what you’re looking at.

Apart from the architecture Prague has a thriving arts scene, though whether some of that deserves to be called ‘art’ is up for debate, as you walk around the city you will inevitably encounter random pieces placed in a seemingly unusual place. I suppose the other half that is the appeal of Prague is its night scene, which may be why I didn’t get to ‘enjoy’ the city as much as a my colleagues at work said they did.

Prague is still a beautiful city, and I can see its appeal in European tourism. But the time we spent there (around three days) was more than what we needed. If you’re not going for the music and night life, two days will suffice. If you tend to lean towards staying at hostels, I would recommend Mosaic House, which turned out to be one the best places I’ve ever stayed.

Though I think for the near immediate future I will stick with the Islamic world.

I saw this on someone’s Facebook page yesterday and it really struck me, so I decided to share it on here. To use an image of, what looks like, a Muslim woman wearing a face covering as a symbol of freedom and struggle against oppression, is certainly in this political climate something very extraordinary. I picked up a copy this evening to find the cover was designed by Ai WeiWei who was one of the other candidates shortlisted for Time’s annual accolade. Even the Muslim working at the till of WhSmith was taken in by it.

As a Muslim blogger it certainly may seem a strange thing that throughout 2011 I haven’t commented on the so-called Arab Spring at all. Personally I feel Islam is not a political religion so to speak, and what has happened in the Middle East has very little to do with it. I’m also very apprehensive as to whether toppling a dictatorial regime, even if it is from the inside, will actually lead to a better government. I suppose it’s the Pakistani within me somewhere, who has seen the results of a nation being ‘liberated’ in the name of faith. Even now we are still seeing unrest in Egypt and the struggle of freedom for Egyptians still goes on. And whether democracy actually equals freedom, I’m not so sure. Though our western politicians and secular philosophers may see saying that as humanist blasphemy, again the Pakistani in me has Zardari to support him. (Who would have thought he’d ever be useful for anything).

Time’s end of year issue, as you would expect, is an excellent summary of the year’s major protests and revolutions. I bought it mainly for the cover, but after reading an issue of Time after nearly 15 years I may pick it up more often.

One day the Holy Prophet said to his Companions,
‘The rich among you should give in the way of God’.
On hearing that command, an overjoyed ‘Umar stood up;
That day he had thousands of dirhams.
Today, for sure, he said in his heart,
My horse will take the lead from Abu Bakr’s.
So he brought his wealth to the Trustworthy
Prophet—
Sacrifice is needed to start a project off.
‘Umar’, asked the Prophet, the Sovereign of the world,
‘A passion for truth is the sole comfort of your
heart.
Did you keep anything back for your family?—
For a Muslim must honour the duty he bears to his relations.’
‘Half’, he said, ‘belongs to wife and children,
The rest I offer to the Community of Light.’
In the meantime that Companion of the Prophet arrived
Who gives strength to the edifice of love and devotion.
No man more loyal, he brought with him
Everything with value in the eyes of world:
Slaves, money, goods and chattels.
He brought his horses, their hooves shining like the moon,
And his camels, mules and asses.
The Prophet said, ‘It is necessary to think of one’s family too!’
That man, who knew the secrets of love, said,
‘You are the one from whom the moon and stars
Receive the brightness of their eyes;
And you are the one for whose sake
The universe was brought into being:
The lamp is enough for the moth,
The flower is enough for the nightingale—
For Abu Bakr the Prophet of God is enough’.

Today I came across a video of Shaykh Muhammad as-Saqqaf performing wudu as per the Shafi’i school:

It reminded me of a video I saw a few months ago of Shaykh Khatri demonstrating wudu in the Maliki school:

Both these videos are excellent demonstrations, one can see the inner dimension of wudu being manifest in the way these scholars perform their purification.
