Muhtar Holland 1935-2010

This morning it was with great sadness that I heard the news of the death of Muhtar Holland, a prolific translator of classical Arabic works and great luminary of Islamic literature. His work in translating texts include many of the books of Imam al-Ghazali and Shaykh Abdal Qadir Jilani. His work on Imam al-Ghazali was the first taste I had of the great ocean that is al-Hujjat al-Islam. His book the Inner Dimensions of Islamic Worship was the first of his I read. It is one of the oldest and most widely circulated Islamic publications in the UK and possibly all of the English Muslim world, it was just recently republished this year again, nearly 30 years since it was first released.
Although the news came with great sadness, it was with some happiness that I discovered that Brother Holland had been able to complete the translation of the entire of Imam al-Ghazali’s ‘Ihya ‘Ulum ad-Deen before he passed away, soon to be published by Fons Vitae. What was Imam al-Ghazali’s masterpiece will surely become Brother Holland’s. A fitting legacy for him to leave behind to the Muslim world.
May Allah forgive him his shortcomings, raise his rank and grant him a place in Jannat al-Firdous. May his works continue to enlighten the Muslim ummah and may they continue to be a source of blessing for him after he has left us.

I am studying the translation of Al-Munqidh translated by five translators including the late M. Holland and need to find out the motives and the conditions of Holland’s new version of Al-Munqidh I would be more than thankful.
